Rice provides several places in which you can store and share different classifications of data, both on campus and in cloud environments. Once properly configured, the locations listed here can be used to store and share data safely and securely.
You can store Rice data files in the space allocated to your Rice NetID called storage.rice.edu (for individual or department data) or crate.rice.edu (for research data). Data in these locations can be shared with internal collaborators. Contact your Rice OIT Divisional Support team member for assistance in configuring your computer to use and properly secure access to it.
You can also safely store paper and electronic documents in the Rice OnBase environment. OnBase provides secure, granular access to sensitive and confidential documents. Contact the Rice OIT Help Desk at 713-348-HELP for information.
Rice also provides cloud based storage from BOX for all faculty, staff and students. This storage resource is unlimited and can be shared with both internal and external collaborators. Data categorization, special security configurations and monitoring MUST be applied to this service when using BOX to store, share, or collaborate with sensitive or confidential information. See the Box User Guidelines for Rice Data.
All of the above locations are safely backed up. If you save files directly to your computer's hard drive, however, you should also consider purchasing the Rice CrashPlan backup service. This service securely backs up sensitive and confidential information automatically and can quickly restore information in the event of a hard drive failure or virus attack. Contact the Rice OIT Help Desk at 713-348-HELP for more information.
